When it comes to carrying your camera, there are only so many ways that work and that truly make sense. The whole wrap your camera in a shirt and put it in your backpack is really getting to me. In Africa, I tried a Clik Elite Backpack, which was great for transporting my gear. Let’s be honest though, you can really miss some amazing moments if you’re trying to fumble around and get your camera out. Luckily, we have Peak Design.
The Capture Mount has been my new go-to for when I need to have my DSLR at my fingertips in a secure fashion. Are you going to take more pictures if your camera is easy to get to and takes seconds to have in your hands? I would hope the answer is yes. Many times, I take my DSLR but I’m too lazy to take it out of my pack and shoot with it so I end up using my iPhone. Well, what’s the point in having a nice camera if you’re not going to use it? If it’s easy and accessible, chances are you will use it more frequently.
The Capture mount hardware is tough and secure, and it works by basically bolting two plates together around a strap. It can be a backpack strap, a belt, a purse, or anything else that’s less than 3 inches wide. The square mounting piece then threads into the tripod socket and secures that way. The square piece then locks into place on the belt or strap mount. This mount can withstand up to 200 pounds of force, so rest assured that your camera is safe.
Peak Design has also developed a kit that you can buy separately that allows one to mount a GoPro or small digital camera to the Capture mount. I love this option because when I’m skiing in the backcountry, I have a ton of stuff going on on my chest. Avy backpack straps, an Avalung, and a radio consume a ton of space on my torso. So I knew immediately after trying it, the GoPro Chest mount was not going to work. I already had too much going on in my torso region. This is amazing because I can eliminate straps and make more open real estate on my torso. It’s a great angle for GoPro’s etc. and no offense, this looks way better than a GoPro mounted to your head!
Peak Design, in their design and innovation, is going places in the camera accessory world and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. The fundamentals and functionality of the Capture Mount make it perfect for anyone who needs their camera readily accessible and easy to grab on the go.
